As the website develops, I will be giving you regular updates of the work I’m taking forward as Education Secretary, as well as reflecting on the issues you raise.
My father entered the teaching profession at the age of 45 – a mature student who, after two decades of putting it off, eventually fulfilled his ambition to teach. However, as time went on he felt that no one listened to teachers, least of all government. I want to set that problem right, if I can, and this website is part of the process.
I strongly believe that there is nothing as important for me and my two ministerial colleagues in the Education and Lifelong Learning portfolio as making a practical connection to the classroom to help provide us with insightful and experienced ideas about how to improve what we do and how we do it.
So teachers are a clear target group for engagement. But so are pupils, parents and other school staff.
I hope that Engage for Education will start to deliver real results. If it is going to succeed, it has to provide an interactive, two-way conversation between the Government and the people delivering, consuming and participating in Scottish education – in every part of the country.
