What To Bring To Your Portrait Session

Bringing your own personal belongings along to your portrait photography session can often add a sense of sentimentality to your final images. While props added to a pose can some times detract from the subject, or even in some cases look tacky and unappealing, choosing the right belongings to included can create added depth and meaning for you in the years to come. Also try using the location of your session to add meaning to your images.

For a pregnancy or maternity session you might take a hand-knitted blanket or shawl that is intended for use by your impending arrival, to be wrapped around your bump. An ultrasound picture held out in front of your bump can add a quirky edge to your image. Hold your pregnancy session in a place that has always been special for you and your partner, or even in your home, to represent your lives as it is before your new baby arrives.

A session with your newborn baby is a little easier. Blankets hand-knitted by grandparents, a special teddy given to your baby at their birth, a tiny bracelet engraved with your baby’s name. Your new baby clutching your wedding rings is always beautiful to see. Capture your newborn within his nursery so you will never forget how tiny he is in his new cot, or how he stares up at his musical mobile.

For young children bring along a favourite book or childhood toy. Think about what activities your child loves most and try to incorporate that in your session.
